Why Chronic Inflammation is Bad for Your Health - The Science

Chronic inflammation has become a controversial topic, the onset of acute inflammation is in response to an insult to human tissue which can be due to trauma, microbes, foreign body and a lot of other causes. Acute inflammation is not always harmful as it helps to get rid of invading organisms and toxins. However, there are cases in which acute inflammation fails to subside and leads to long-standing chronic inflammation. How do you know that you have inflammation?  These signs will confirm that you have inflammation: 

  • The involved tissue has swelling  
  • The region is red as compared to the surrounding area  
  • When you touch the inflamed region, it is slightly hotter than other regions 
  • The involved area is painful  
  • There is a loss of function in the inflamed region  

 Inflammation is directly irritating because you don’t want the pain and the functional loss, but other than just pain and the functional loss, there is much more to inflammation. There are many chronic diseases which involve chronic longstanding inflammation as well as a life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction. Inflammation isn’t called silent killer without any reason.  Inflammation and Diabetes  Fat cells also are known as adipose cells produce inflammatory biomarkers through a long process which produce inflammation. The resultant inflammation further intensifies insulin resistance in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus which results in hyperglycemia (increased sugar level in blood) and aggravates insulin (Source). Therefore control of long-standing inflammation is very important in diabetic patients. Researches have shown that exercise increases the production of mediators from the muscle cells which helps to control inflammation, that’s why exercise should be added in the management of Type 2 diabetes (Source). Probiotics show a significant role in inflammation, fortified food with probiotics should be added in the treatment of diabetes (Source).Inflammation and Hypersensitivity (allergies)Hypersensitivity occurs when our immune cells produce exaggerated response towards normally innocent environmental stimulus like pollens by the production of inflammatory mediators like histamine in the body. This pathophysiology is the basis of various diseases like asthma, to avoid this life-threatening condition you need to control your inflammation (Source).Inflammation and Atherosclerosis  Atherosclerosis is a dangerous condition in which there is an accumulation of lipids in arterial walls leading to obstruction of vessels supplying oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles causing cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks, though it may seem as a metabolic disease, inflammation is now considered as an important step in the pathophysiology of this disease (Source).Inflammation and Arthritis Arthritis is not an uncommon disease, you must have heard of it. Inflammation is an important step which leads to this disease by the dysfunction of endothelial cells in your joints and surrounding soft tissue (Source). Your physician will treat your inflammation along with your arthritis.  Inflammation and Cancer Maybe you’ve never thought of cancer as an inflammatory disease before. We all know cancer is an uncontrolled division of our cells but is it an inflammatory disease? Recent studies show molecular events linking inflammation and cancer together which include both genetic pathways and extrinsic pathways driven by inflammatory conditions (Source).Inflammation and Depression Low-grade inflammation leads to depression through a complex pathway that you may not need to know. That’s why depression responds to various anti-inflammatory drugs available in the market (Source). Also, dietary changes have shown to control depression by bringing down chronic inflammation. Inflammation and Brain Health Inflammatory changes in the brain cause dysfunction of mitochondria and hence energy supply to the brain is compromised leading to ageing of the brain. Inflammatory changes in the brain are seen in brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (Source).
